Tooro
Kingdom has entered a six-month transition period under the new reign of King
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, following the appointment of a 12-member interim
advisory committee and the retention of Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire as interim
Prime Minister.
The new leadership structure is expected to provide continuity, guide the
administration and support the reorganisation of kingdom affairs as Tooro
begins a new chapter.
The King of Tooro, Edward Rukidi
Nyabongo I, has appointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire as the kingdom’s
interim Prime Minister, placing him at the centre of the administration as
Tooro begins a six-month transition under the new reign.
The appointment was announced by Paul
Nyakana Businge, the Principal Secretary to the King, in a statement issued
on behalf of the monarch.
Rwomiire is not new to the kingdom’s
top administrative office. He previously served as Prime Minister during the reign
of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV and will now
continue overseeing the kingdom’s affairs as the new administration establishes
its structures.
The appointment is expected to
provide continuity at a time when the kingdom is reorganising following the end
of Oyo’s 31-year reign.
King Nyabongo also retained Prince
Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki as the Omusuga of Tooro, while
appointing Prince Kato Benard Rwakatale Abbooki as his deputy.

Kamurasi is the Chief Prince and
head of the Babiito Royal Clan, while Rwakatale has previously served as
his assistant in the Omusuga’s office.
The King further appointed an 11-member
interim advisory committee to support the administration during the
transition. The committee comprises Erisa Kakyomya, Peace Mutuuzo, Chris
Kaijuka, Isaiah Mayombo, Benald Tungwako, Flavia Kabahenda, Aston Kajara, Binta
Kasoojo, Abdullah Mangalija, William Byaruhanga and Monica Rubombora.
The interim leadership structure is
intended to maintain the functioning of kingdom institutions while preparations
are made for longer-term administrative arrangements.
The six-month transition follows the
installation of Nyabongo as the new Omukama of Tooro after the death of Oyo on August
27, 2026.
Nyabongo’s accession came after
weeks of disagreements within the kingdom over the succession process, with
members of the late king’s family and other stakeholders taking different
positions on the identity of his successor.
Against this background, the new
administration faces the task of maintaining institutional stability while
building confidence around the new reign.
The retention of Rwomiire is
particularly significant because of his previous experience at the centre of
kingdom administration. His continued service is expected to provide
institutional memory and stability as the new King settles into office.
Meanwhile, the interim advisory
committee gives the monarch a broader platform for consultation as the kingdom
develops its permanent leadership arrangements.
Nyabongo’s administration is now
expected to use the six-month transition period to reorganise the kingdom’s
affairs, strengthen its institutions and establish a permanent administrative
structure for the new reign.
The appointments therefore mark an
important step in Tooro’s transition from the long reign of Oyo to a new era
under King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
